A Close Shave

By Deepak Edwin

It’s a nice cool midday in Gdansk.

8 deg C.

The air is crisp and cool. With a menthol finish.

The sun shyly playing peek-a-boo with the clouds.

Canoeists on the Motlawa river. Fit and sinewy. The more portly hang around the bars and pubs
downing Tyskie, the more famous Polish alternative to Heineken.

Tourists have arrived. Even though it technically isn’t summer. It’s spring.

In droves. Some slit eyed with fancy cameras with long zooms.

Some just having a hotdog. Some looking for a great deal on amber.

In case you still don’t know, Gdansk is the amber capital of Europe. Plenty of these here.

I personally don’t dig amber.

Diamonds are any day better. Remember, they are a girl’s best friend 

Street artists are out. With violins and cellos. Some just strumming on their guitars.

But before I step out for a few beers and food, I need to shower and shave.

Which brings me to the topic of the day.

The cut-throat.

Back from the 60s.

Remember those good old days you went nervously clutching your Dad’s hand to the local barber
shop for a haircut and saw those monstrous barbers vigorously sharpening their knives on a leather
strap hanging on the wall?

These knives, also going by the more affectionate name ‘cut-throat’ are available as bespoke royal
collections in the UK as well as some great brands in the US. They do live up to their name though.

You do need nerves of steel. Yes, to prevent cuts and nicks.

The Tools

A bowl of warm water. A good brush, preferably badger hair or squirrel hair. Good shaving cream
that can develop a thick lather. A good cut-throat, well-polished and sharp. A wet, warm towel.

The Recipe

Wash face with warm water.

Work up a lather. Hold cut-throat firm with one hand, stretch facial skin with other

Shave with firm, swift strokes from neck up to face.

Apply after-shave generously.

Finish off by wrapping your face in a warm towel for few minutes.

Gentlemen – do what Gillette and Wilkinson tell you all along. Disposable razors? Dispose them 

Get a cut-throat.

Ladies – Get one for your husband; brother; Dad. They won’t stop thanking you.

Now, step into your friendly neighbourhood bar or club. And watch heads turn

Have a great evening guys!
